CMD therapy in Hamburg-Ottensen

When your jaw clicks, feels tense in the morning or causes headaches — and nobody is quite sure why.

What CMD is

CMD stands for craniomandibular dysfunction: a functional disorder in the interplay of the temporomandibular joint, the chewing muscles and the teeth. The jaw joint is one of the most mobile joints in the body and is closely connected to the cervical spine and shoulder girdle through muscles and nerve pathways.

That is why CMD often shows up not at the jaw itself but as headache, ear noise or neck tension — and correspondingly goes unrecognised as a jaw problem for a long time.

When treatment makes sense

  • clicking or grinding in the jaw joint when opening and closing
  • restricted mouth opening, or a jaw that deviates to one side
  • pain when chewing, tense chewing muscles in the morning
  • headaches around the temples, especially after waking
  • grinding or clenching at night
  • neck complaints that do not respond to usual treatment

How it works with me

I examine the jaw joint and chewing muscles — from the outside and, if necessary and acceptable to you, from the inside — and always include the cervical spine. Very often part of the cause sits there.

Treatment uses manual techniques on the joint and muscles, plus exercises for movement control and relaxation that you carry out yourself. With grinding and clenching, the question of everyday triggers comes in as well.

CMD is an area where dentistry and physiotherapy work closely together. In this case your dentist issues the prescription, on a separate dental remedies form.

Billing

I treat patients with all statutory health insurers, private patients, employers’ liability insurance associations (BG) and self-payers.

Whether your treatment runs on a prescription or as a self-pay service, we clarify before the first appointment — you know in advance what to expect.
